And finally… prime lot

Winston Churchill’s slippers have sold for nearly £40,00 at an auction this week.

The velvet slippers, which date back to the 1950s, are embroidered with Churchill’sWSC’ initials in gold thread.

The former leader’s footwear was auctioned on Tuesday afternoon for the first time in more than 20 years.

As well as the slippers, a large brandy glass belonging to Churchill also went under the hammer.

The items were sold by Bellmans Auctioneers based in Wisborough Green, West Sussex, Sky News reports.

The expected sale price of the slippers was £10,000-£15,000. When the bidding stopped the price agreed was £32,000 - rising to £39,040 with buyer’s premium.

Despite interest from the United States, a private bidder from the UK will be taking home the two items.
