Le Coq Maurice opened at a farm theatre in France on Sunday and was inspired by the tale of a noisy bird and his irritated neighbour on the Atlantic coast island of Oléron.

Maurice’s owner, Corinne Fesseau, was taken to court by a retired couple over the rooster’s dawn crowing, ultimately leading to a law protecting “sensorial heritage”.

The one-act opera is being performed in Maurice’s home town of Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron today, Bastille Day.
