WineSearcher experts also revealed a 1985 bottle of Richebourg Grand Cru from Burgundy as table-topper of an annual list of the 50 most expensive wines.

The index, based on data from nearly 55,000 price lists, showed the bottle of plonk comes in at a fruity €15,195 (£9,806).

The wine is created Henri Jayer, who is widely credited as one of the most important winemakers in Burgundy of his time, drawing particular acclaim in the 1970s and 1980s. He died in 2006 at the age of 84.

While the price of this particular bottle may seem eye watering, just this year a £10 bottle of Chardonnay sold at Marks & Spencer was named the best in the world.
