Accountant named as new ethical standards commissioner

The Scottish Parliament will next week be invited to agree to the appointment of Caroline Anderson as the new commissioner for ethical standards in public life in Scotland.

The commissioner is responsible for investigating complaints about the conduct of MSPs, local authority councillors, members of public bodies and lobbyists.

The commissioner also regulates how people are appointed to the boards of public bodies in Scotland.



Ms Anderson is set to succeed Bill Thompson who demits office on 31 March. This position is full-time, for a single term of five years with a salary of £73,000 per annum.

Ms Anderson is a Chartered Accountant with over 20 years of specialist experience in regulation and compliance, gained mainly within professional services environments.

Her ministerial appointments include: chair of the Audit and Risk Committee of the Disclosure and Barring Service and tribunal member of the Competition and Appeals Tribunal, a specialist judicial body.

She has held senior executive roles in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand with a focus on regulation of the professions and financial services.
