And finally… cash in the attic
An Edinburgh family got rather more than they bargained for while clearing out their home after discovering a forgotten collection of antique silver hidden away in the attic.
The haul of more than 100 British and continental silver pieces, dating from the early 18th to the early 20th centuries, had been packed into dusty chests and left untouched for almost a century.
The collection, uncovered as the family prepared to sell their New Town property, was sent to London auctioneer Elmwood’s with an estimated value of around £23,000.
Instead, bidders drove the final total to £59,761.
The standout item was a set of vintage Danish silver cutlery, which sold for £5,200, The Independent reports.
The family, who wish to remain anonymous, said they had no idea the collection even existed until they stumbled across it while clearing the attic.
A spokesperson said they were “thrilled with the outcome and completely overwhelmed by the response”, describing the discovery as an “extraordinary journey” after what began as an unexpected find.
