And finally… big bang

A cannonball from the Battle of Culloden has sold for £18,900 at auction in Edinburgh, smashing its estimate of £3,000-£5,000.
The iron ball, engraved with “Ogilvy Culloden 16 April 1746” on a silver collar, was a highlight of Lyon & Turnbull’s ‘Scotland Collected’ sale.
The cannonball was part of a collection of over 80 lots from the Earls of Airlie. Another significant item, a brocaded gown reputedly worn by Lady Margaret Ogilvy to a ball hosted by Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745, fetched £20,160, almost double its expected price.
The auction house attributed the high prices to the items’ exceptional provenance and direct link to the 1745 Jacobite rising, a pivotal moment in Scottish history. The rising concluded with the Battle of Culloden, where about 1,600 men were killed in under an hour. All stated prices include the buyer’s premium.
