And finally…businessman buys photograph of a potato for €1m

AF PotatoAn inebriated European businessman has bought a photograph of an Irish potato for €1m (£750,000) after seeing it on the wall of a celebrated photographer as the pair drank wine together.

Snapper Kevin Abosch, 46, confirmed he had sold the photograph of the organic potato shot on a black background to the unnamed businessman.

There are three versions of the potato print in existence - one belongs in his private collection, another was donated to an art museum in Serbia and the third was sold to the unnamed businessman.

Mr Abosch told the Sunday Times: “It’s not the first time that someone has bought the art right off my wall.

“We had two glasses of wine and he said, ‘I really like that’. Two more glasses of wine and he said: ‘I really want that.’

“We set the price two weeks later. It is the most I have been paid for a piece of work that has been bought .”

Abosch took the picture of the organic Irish potato back in 2010 as part of a series, but he’s already known for snapping celebrities like Johnny Depp and Steven Spielberg.

The Irish photographer’s trademark portraits and their black backgrounds have been highly sought after among the rich and famous - last week he was invited to the World Economic Forum in Davos.

A starting price for one of his portraits will reportedly set you back around at least £200,000.

The artist said he had the spud delivered to him in a batch of organic vegetables, and says he understands how some people could see the price tag as being a little “absurd”.

Mr Abosch said he is not sure what happened to the million euro tattie in question - called Potato #345 - as he photographed many for a special series.
