The Jaques of London chess set was owned by a couple from Newton-in-Bowland who gifted the set to their son after it had been passed down through several generations.

The chess set was sold at Shaw’s Auction House at the weekend.

The buyer, who collects Jaques chess sets, said he has been “searching for a jewel” to add to his collection, the Lancashire Telegraph reports.
