And finally... dolling out the cash

An early 19th-century wooden peg doll has sold at auction for £3,000, fetching ten times its original estimate of £200 to £300 and setting a record price for a doll of this kind.

Irita Marriott Auctioneers and Valuers, based in Melbourne, Derbyshire, described the bidding as “fast-paced” before the doll was eventually snapped up by a UK collector earlier this month, BBC reports.

Peg dolls were traditionally handmade from wooden pegs or small pieces of wood and cost very little to produce. In this case, it was complete in its original costume, featuring a straw bonnet, cream silk dress, mother-of-pearl belt and red leather shoes.

The seller had previously taken the doll to BBC One’s Antiques Roadshow, where it was valued at £1,000 – a decade ago when the market for such collectables was at an all-time high.
