And finally… going bananas
A Tesco supermarket in Kirkwall, Orkney, has been giving away thousands of bananas after an ordering error resulted in a delivery of 38,000 pieces of fruit – 380 boxes of approximately 100 bananas each.
A spokesperson for the supermarket said that colleagues had been inviting local schools and community groups to collect the surplus fruit for redistribution, with most of the bananas now having found new homes.
The blunder is not the first of its kind in Orkney. In 2024, Dan Dafydd, owner of Sinclair General Store on the island of Sanday, accidentally ordered 80 cases of Easter eggs rather than 80 individual eggs, leaving him with 720 chocolate eggs to sell to an island population of around 500 people.
Rather than going to waste, the surplus stock inspired a raffle that raised £6,000 for charity, STV reports.
