And finally... going for green

Handwritten lyrics and chords for the 1969 Fleetwood Mac hit ‘Man of the World’ are set to go under the hammer at Ewbank’s auction house in Surrey.

The composition sheet, penned by the band’s co-founder Peter Green, is expected to fetch up to £15,000.

The document, written in blue ballpoint pen with corrections in black ink, reveals Green’s creative process. It shows he altered three lines, added another to the final verse, and marked his finalised choices with a tick, BBC reports.

‘Man of the World’ reached number two in the UK charts and is considered one of Green’s most significant works, alongside ‘Albatross’ and ‘Black Magic Woman’. A spokesperson for Ewbank’s noted the song’s poignant nature, stating that it reflected the guitarist’s deteriorating mental state. “Green himself said that he wrote the song when he was at his saddest,” they commented, adding that Mick Fleetwood believed it helped explain why Green quit the band in 1970.

After Green’s departure, Fleetwood Mac did not perform the song live until 2019. Green passed away in 2020.
