A ban on tomato imports from Iran, India and Afghanistan is responsible for the dramatic increase in tomato prices.

As a result, thieves have begun to target tomato crops after prices increased fivefold in the space of a week.

Tomatoes are a staple of Pakistani cuisine and have been selling for 350 rupees £1.75 per kilogram in a country where unemployment is on the rise and economic woes are intensifying.

Kapil Dev, a farmer from the Badin district, told The Times that he had hired two guards to watch over his 16 acres of land.

He said: “It is the first time in 30 years that I’ve been concerned about people stealing my crop.”
