And finally... Mexican standoff

Mexicans are hoarding bank notes which depict the country’s beloved axolotl, research has found.

According to a report from the Bank of Mexico, around 11.2 million people told a survey that they’re holding onto 50 peso notes instead of spending them.

Most of those – around 8.6 million – said it was because of the design, which includes an illustration of Gorda, from Mexico’s axolotl museum Axolotitlán.

The 50 peso note went into circulation in 2021 and was named Note of the Year by the International Bank Notes Society, The Guardian reports.

Axolotls are close to extinction, and the founder of Axolotitlán has welcomed the bank note as an opportunity to spread awareness of their plight.

Pamela Valencia said: “Today we can see how the axolotl is becoming part of our culture, our everyday lives. We cannot save something if we don’t know it exists.”
