And finally… nosey

A Chinese city is launching an identification system to keep track of stray dogs and prevent pet insurance fraud by scanning their noses.

And finally... nosey

Much like the human fingerprint, a dog’s noseprint is unique and does not change over time.

The city of Hangzhou is trialling a programme that uses noseprint recognition technology to register its pet dogs. There are an estimated 100,000 dogs in the city, many of them are unregistered.

The city’s authorities require owners to use a mobile payment app to upload a picture of the dog’s nose and receive a digital identity card.
Once the dog is registered, officials can identify it by scanning the animal’s nose, The Times reports.

One problem reported by owners is the challenge of taking a high-quality close-up image of a dog’s nose. They often move, resulting in blurred images being uploaded.
