And finally…Halfords CFO convicted over boozy golf buggy ride

The chief financial officer of UK bike retailer Halfords has been sentenced to two weeks in jail and hit with a £12,000 fine as well as a driving ban for drink-driving in a golf buggy at a Norwegian holiday resort.

Jonny Mason was caught by police as he drove the battery-powered buggy at 6mph from a beach bar to his apartment on private land in Kragero in the Scandinavian country where it is illegal to drink-drive on private, as well as public, property.

The size of the fine was linked to the the millionaire’s earnings and Mr Mason’s driving ban in the country will stand for two years.

Mason, 52, was at a meeting at Halfords HQ in Redditch, Worcestershire when sentence was passed.

According to the Sun newspaper, his lawyer refused to say if Mr Mason would return voluntarily to serve the jail term.

Norway has an extradition treaty with the UK.

Halfords said: “The incident took place driving a golf cart at less than 10kmph on a cart path at a private golf resort. Jonny was unaware this was an offence and did not contest the charge.”

A former associate said: “Jonny didn’t think he was doing anything wrong in a tranquil resort miles from anywhere.”
