Bruce Cartwright CA has been appointed as the next chair of Audit Scotland.

Succeeding Colin Crosby OBE, Mr Cartwright’s role will commence on 1 October 2026.

Mr Cartwright brings extensive professional experience to the role, having spent eight years as CEO of ICAS (the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland). He has also served as director and chair of the Global Accountancy Alliance, director of Chartered Accountants Worldwide, and held positions with the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies and the Centre for Public Interest Audit.

He is a former partner at the Big Four firm PwC. As chair, he will lead Audit Scotland’s board and work closely with its staff to set the organisation’s strategic direction.

Additionally, Dr Catherine Maclean has been appointed as a non-executive member of the board of Audit Scotland, starting on 10 July 2026. She will replace Jackie Mann, who demits office on 9 July 2026.

Dr Maclean is a consultant in acute medicine with NHS Lanarkshire, bringing more than 20 years of frontline clinical experience along with a range of NHS leadership roles spanning governance, workforce development and organisational culture. She also completed the UK Boardroom Apprentice programme, through which she gained direct insight into public sector governance and the role of public audit. In her board role, she will support the sound governance of Audit Scotland and provide independent challenge and support to the executive team.

Audit Scotland supports the Auditor General and the Accounts Commission in holding the Scottish Government and public sector bodies to account for the proper, efficient and effective use of approximately £60 billion of public money each year. The chair’s role requires a minimum commitment of 32 days per annum at a daily rate of £488.28, whilst the non-executive board member role requires at least 24 days per annum at a daily rate of £380.87. Neither post is pensionable.
