Barclays appoints new head of UK corporate banking as tech team is targeted for cuts

Tasnim Ghiawadwala

Tasnim Ghiawadwala has joined Barclays as its new head of UK corporate banking as news emerged that the high street giant is considering more than one hundred redundancies in its technology infrastructure team.

Ms Ghiawadwala joins the bank from Citi, where she spent 21 years most recently as head of commercial bank europe, Middle East and Africa.

At Citi, she held a range of roles across Investment Banking, Corporate and Commercial Bank, and Regional Management and worked at JP Morgan and Commercial Union prior to Citi.

Announcing the appointment, head of corporate banking at Barclays, Alistair Currie, said: “Tasnim brings a wealth of transformational growth and banking experience to Barclays and I look forward to working with her as we continue to strengthen our UK Corporate Banking franchise. In Tasnim, we have the expertise and experience to help us deliver a market-leading relationship service to our clients and I am delighted to welcome her to the team.”

Ms Ghiawadwala will be replacing Gavin Isle, who earlier this year announced his decision to retire from Barclays after 36 years at the lender.

Meanwhile, Barclays has told 134 UK staff in its technology infrastructure team their roles are being considered for termination.

The ‘big four’ bank is in the process of reorganising its ‘Global Technology Infrastructure and Services’ division.

Around two-thirds (87) of the 134 impacted roles are at its Radbroke Hall location, in Knutsford, Cheshire. Most of the remaining third (45) will be cut in London.

One role is being considered in Glasgow, and one in Northampton.

In contrast the reshuffle would see the addition of around 50 jobs in Barclays’ team in Pune, India.
