The House of Bruar retail destination at Blair Atholl has reported a robust financial performance in the year to 31 January 2024, with turnover rising 15% to £45 million.

The results, filed at Companies House, were driven largely by the expansion of direct shopping channels, which now account for half of the company’s revenue.

EBITDA also saw a healthy rise of around 11%, surpassing £10m for the 12-month period. However, the family-owned business faced increased costs, with the annual salary bill also rising by 11%, resulting in over £1m in additional expenses.

Managing director Patrick Birkbeck emphasised the importance of providing an exceptional retail experience, highlighting the company’s focus on “really looking after” customers by having “the best people” on the shop floor.

Looking ahead to 2024, the House of Bruar expressed concerns about the state of the economy and the uncertainty created by upcoming elections, both domestically and internationally. The war in Ukraine has also impacted the business, doubling its annual power costs.

The company, in partnership with Atholl Estates, aims to enhance its service on the A9 by providing electric vehicle charging points. However, a recent quotation estimated the cost of providing power to the site at £4m due to the lack of capacity in the network infrastructure.
