Edinburgh cleaning firm expands Midlands business with Eco-Clean acquisition
Spotless managing director Nicola Barbour and Eco-Clean co-founder Angela Varney
Edinburgh-headquartered Spotless Commercial Cleaning Ltd has acquired Midlands firm Eco-Clean and Maintenance Ltd, an office and schools cleaning specialist employing more than 100 staff, for an undisclosed sum.
The deal, which is the fifth UK acquisition by Spotless over the past two years, will grow the company’s annual revenues to more than £34 million and further bolster its presence across the Midlands where they will now employ around 250 staff.
Rugby-based Eco-Clean was founded in 2004 by husband-and-wife team Angela and Bill Varney with a strong focus on creating a successful cleaning business based on quality service and attention to detail. Since its inception, the company has been committed to the health of its clients and staff with a high emphasis on using eco-friendly products wherever possible.
Along with the transfer of its cleaning staff and management, Eco-Clean’s founders will also remain involved in the business to help ensure a smooth transition of its operations across the Midlands. The company will also continue to operate under its current name for the foreseeable future.
This latest development in the Spotless journey follows its 2023 acquisitions of Manchester-based Purity Group and Clearsprings Support Services Ltd, a Salisbury cleaning business servicing clients across Greater London and southern English counties. Last year Spotless acquired two further English businesses, Norwich-based Ashdown Cleaning Ltd and Fluid Options Ltd, a hospitality sector specialist in New Malden, Surrey.
Through organic growth and its acquisition strategy, Spotless has now increased its headcount to more than 2,200 people operating across a network of 14 UK offices.
Spotless managing director Nicola Barbour said: “As quality-focused businesses with a strong commitment to both clients and colleagues, Eco-Clean and Spotless share a close alignment in values.
“We are delighted to welcome their team and look forward to working with them as we continue to provide a high-quality service for their Midlands client base.”
Spotless chairman and founder Roger Green said: “This latest acquisition builds on our presence across the Midlands and really enhances our footprint within the education sector. It also further develops the Spotless brand as we continue to expand across the UK.
“Angela has built a really solid and highly regarded business and we look forward to working with them as part of our growing team.”
