Employee-owned Highland Fuels acquires Carnegie Fuels

Employee-owned Highland Fuels acquires Carnegie Fuels

The employee-owned Scottish fuel distributor, Highland Fuels, has acquired its sector counterpart, Carnegie Fuels, in a deal described as the “beginning of a new chapter” for both organisations.

Established in 1957, Inverness-based Highland Fuels has purchased the Brechin-based business which was coincidentally founded in the same year. The acquisition was guided by a “strong cultural alignment” and a shared reputation for service and community focus.

A key factor in the deal was Highland Fuels’ employee-owned structure, which it adopted in August 2023. The leadership at Carnegie Fuels highlighted this as a crucial element in their decision, ensuring their long-serving employees would be looked after and have a stable future.

Under the terms of the transaction, Carnegie Fuels will continue to operate under its existing name and management. Ryan Carnegie has been appointed as a director, with Kevin and Rosie Carnegie assisting during the transition period.

“This is a very positive step for both businesses and for the communities we serve,” said Stephen Rhodes, Managing Director at Highland Fuels. “We’re honoured to be continuing the Carnegie legacy and welcoming the team into the Highland Fuels family. This partnership is built on shared values and a commitment to long-term success.”

Highland Fuels is Scotland’s largest independent fuel distributor, with 11 depots, 16 petrol stations, and a fleet of 50 tankers. Mr Rhodes added that the partnership creates a “strong foundation for operational continuity and sustainable growth” to meet Scotland’s future energy needs.
