GB Energy is new tenant in Marischal Square
Marischal Square
Great British Energy – the new publicly-owned energy company – is to be headquartered in Aberdeen city centre’s Marischal Square development.
It will occupy more than 8,400 sq ft of office space in the grade A building, which is one of the most environmentally-friendly offices in Aberdeen, to place itself at the heart of the city while remaining close to the sector in the energy capital of Europe.
The state-of-the-art Marischal Square comprises 122,000 sq ft over six floors and has one of the best BREEAM and EPC ratings of any office building in Aberdeen with sustainability features and technology embedded throughout.
Aberdeen City Council City Co-Leader Councillor Ian Yuill said: “Aberdeen is at the forefront of the transition in the energy sector while ensuring the security of the existing oil and gas chain.
“We welcome Great British Energy to the city as part of this essential work to the economy which is vital not only for the securing the expertise locally but good for the future energy needs of the country.”
Aberdeen City Council City Co-Leader Councillor Christian Allard said: “It’s welcome news that another organisation, Great British Energy, has chosen to move into Marischal Square.
“Marischal Square provides high quality office space within our city, and we are pleased to welcome yet another tenant.”
The building will be leased and managed by the Government Property Agency (GPA) which is responsible for the majority of the government office estate.
The new HQ will host GBE’s main corporate functions, supply chain activities, and major development projects including ambitions in deep-water offshore wind. It is currently working closely with partners to attract top talent and ensure its presence supports investment and job creation in the region. Recruitment is ongoing and a broader drive will launch this year.
GB Energy has the aim to power the UK with clean, secure, home-grown energy and to become a global leader in clean energy by investing in renewables, boosting energy security, and creating good jobs.
It will invest in, develop, build and operate the technology the UK needs to increase its energy independence, and give communities a direct stake in the clean energy revolution and transition.
GB Energy’s CEO Dan McGrail said: “Aberdeen is the perfect location for Britain’s publicly owned energy company. It is a world-leading energy hub and has been crucial to our energy security for decades and I am delighted Marischal Square will be the location of our permanent headquarters.
“Thousands of engineers, innovators, and technicians call Aberdeen home. That is why we are proud to make this city our home and become a part of the Aberdeen community. Great British Energy will draw on the abundant local talent to provide investment and support for projects across the country.”
Energy Minister Michael Shanks said: “With Great British Energy’s new permanent headquarters confirmed in Aberdeen, Scotland’s world-class energy expertise and talent will be central to unlocking investment in clean energy and creating jobs both in the city and across the whole of the UK.
“Aberdeen has been central to the country’s energy sector for decades, and the government’s clean energy mission is continuing the city’s legacy of powering Britain.”
Mark Bourgeois, the GPA’s CEO, said: “We are proud to have secured this space for Great British Energy in Aberdeen, underlining our commitment to creating a government office estate that enables its workforce to be as productive as possible in every nation and region of the UK.
“As well as being its permanent home, Marischal Square will provide the company with a workplace that is both modern and collaborative – supporting the performance of its staff.”
