Glasgow banker trades in 30-year finance career for lawn care franchise

Mark Hull

After nearly three decades in the world of corporate finance, banker Mark Hull has made a radical career change, trading his desk for the outdoors to launch the new Greensleeves Lawn Care franchise in South Glasgow.

Originally from Belfast, Mr Hull initially trained as a chartered accountant and went on to built a career in banking across Belfast, London, and eventually settling in Glasgow. He decided to leave the financial sector behind, seeking a new chapter that was hands-on, outdoors and independent – building something that reflects his values and energy.

“I’d reached a point where I wanted something different,” said Mr Hull. “I’d spent years in meetings and behind a desk, and I realised I wanted to be in control of my own future. I’ve always worked hard to help other businesses grow – now I wanted to put that energy into growing something for myself.”

He launched his Greensleeves franchise in September after completing the brand’s thorough training programme. The mix of classroom sessions, field-based learning and one-to-one mentoring equipped him with the knowledge, systems and practical skills to start serving customers from day one.

“The training and support have been brilliant,” explained Mr Hull. “The week at head office gave me all the knowledge I needed, and then my business development manager, Mike Hemming, came up and spent time with me on-site – that really built my confidence. Everyone at head office has been so helpful, and the other franchisees have been great too. You’re running your own business, but it never feels like you’re on your own.”

The lifestyle shift has been just as rewarding as the business journey, explained Mr Hull: “Now I’m outside all day, meeting people, seeing the difference we make to their lawns – and I’m doing over 20,000 steps a day!

“That’s a big jump from the 6,000 I might manage in the office. I feel fitter, happier and more fulfilled. It’s hard work, but it’s the good kind – the kind that makes you proud at the end of the day.”

Starting in autumn also proved a smart move. “It’s actually been a great time to begin,” he added. “It’s given me the breathing space to get everything right – from the systems to the treatments – before things ramp up in spring. Now I’m heading into next year with real momentum.”

Cheryl Harper, managing director of Greensleeves Lawn Care, said: “Mark is a fantastic addition to the Greensleeves network. His transition from corporate banking into franchising shows how our model appeals to professionals who want a new and rewarding direction.

“With his business experience, determination and enthusiasm, we’re confident Mark will make a real success of his South Glasgow franchise.”
