Law firm at centre of Panama Papers to close

Mossack Fonseca, 11.5 million of whose files were leaked during the investigation into offshore finances, will close its remaining offices by the end of this month, according to a statement obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

“The reputational deterioration, the media campaign, the financial siege and the irregular actions of some Panamanian authorities have caused irreparable damage, whose obligatory consequence is the total cessation of operations to the public,” the statement reads.

It added that it would “continue to call for justice” and assist authorities to “demonstrate that no crime has been committed”.

The closure of the firm comes two years after information was leaked about more than 214,000 offshore entities linked to 12 current or former heads of state as well as 140 politicians and others. The revelations even forced the prime ministers of both Pakistan and Iceland to leave office.
