Scotland’s largest independent accountancy and business advisory firm, Johnston Carmichael, has appointed one of the UK’s leading business recovery practitioners to its restructuring team.

With 34 years of corporate recovery experience, Bryan Jackson joins Johnston Carmichael as a consultant, managing a Scotland-wide remit as a key figure within the firm’s restructuring team.

In particular, he bolsters the Aberdeen team during a difficult period in the North East as companies look at restructuring their business models to remain sustainable in light of a lower oil price.

Mr Jackson has successfully led the formal insolvency appointment for six football clubs in Scotland (most recently Heart of Midlothian) and one in England, all of which continue to operate to this day. His corporate restructuring portfolio extends to a much wider range of sectors including retail where he handled high profile administrations for the likes of The Gadget Shop, USC and the southern division of Optical Express.

He is a highly respected voice on both corporate and personal insolvency who has served on numerous bodies promoting his profession.

He is a member of ICAS and former chairman of its Insolvency Committee; a Fellow of Association of Business Recovery Professionals (R3); a member of The Chartered Institute of Credit Management and a former Non-Executive Board Member of the Accountant in Bankruptcy. A past examiner on personal insolvency of the Joint Insolvency Examination Board (JIEB), Bryan has lectured extensively about his profession over the course of his career.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Jackson said: “After 34 fantastic years at PKF, which laterally became BDO following merger, I feel really energised by this new opportunity with Johnston Carmichael. It’s a highly regarded Scottish-based firm with a strong growth record and great people. I know some of Johnston Carmichael’s business recovery experts, whom I have worked with over recent years, and now look forward to supporting the wider Restructuring team in this new chapter of my career.”

Matt Henderson, head of restructuring at Johnston Carmichael, added: “Bryan is one of the most experienced and respected insolvency practitioners in the UK and brings tremendous value to the firm. With a long and distinguished track record, he has a wealth of experience and excellent links into a wide range of referral sources including banks, solicitors, accountants and advisory services as well as other corporate and personal clients. We’re very excited to welcome him to our team.”
