New English owners for historic Edinburgh QS firm

Ewan Slight, Alan Harper, Byron Tyson, and Tom Lamb

Morham + Brotchie Ltd (M+B), a historic Edinburgh-based quantity surveying and cost consultancy firm, has been acquired by Cumbria-based A. Lamb Associates (ALA), a quantity surveying and commercial consultancy.

The deal is expected to enhance the reach of ALA’s services, boost its workforce to over fifty, and significantly increase both firms’ capabilities across Scotland and England.

Established in 1876, M+B’s client list includes several Scottish heritage and cultural bodies such as the National Museums of Scotland, the Scottish Historic Buildings Trust, and the National Trust of Scotland, amongst others.

The acquisition builds upon M+B’s recent involvement in projects like The Queen’s Gallery in Edinburgh, the National Museum of Flight, and The Johnnie Walker Experience on Edinburgh’s Princes Street.

On the other hand, ALA, a family-owned firm set up in 1996, provides commercial services across the construction industry, with a specialisation in major construction, infrastructure and energy projects globally.

Projects led by ALA include the Khazzan gas pipeline project in Oman, the Thirlmere Link water pipeline in Cumbria, and the Baltic Pipe project in Denmark.

Post-acquisition, Byron Tyson and Tom Lamb from ALA will take on director roles at M+B. The existing leadership team of M+B will continue, with Alan Harper becoming chairman and David Anderson taking on the role of managing director. Ewan Slight and Euan Watson will continue in their director roles.

This new structure is intended to allow M+B to continue providing first-class services while benefiting from increased resources and capabilities.

Mr Lamb, managing director at ALA, expressed excitement over the acquisition, stating it as a significant moment for both companies.

He said: “It takes us to a collective of over 50 exceptional staff, and is another milestone on our ALA25 business plan, as we work towards our goal of a 100-strong team.

“Our objective is to create a stronger and better business that is the market leader in our chosen sectors.”

Mr Harper, chairman at M+B partnership added: “We’ve been familiar with the team at ALA for some time, and have always valued the synergy and cultural alignments between our two organisations.

“Our shared values made taking this step feel natural for both parties, and it represents an opportunity for two well-established QS consultancies to share best practice, develop talent and provide market-leading services to our clients. The future is bright.”

Morton Fraser LLP provided legal advice to M+B’s shareholders. HSBC, led by relationship manager James Toppin provided banking to ALA, whilst MHA Moore and Smalley provided accountancy. ALA received legal advice from Napthens LLP.
