Former Glasgow Airport CEO Derek Provan has been elected as the new president of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.

Outgoing president Gillian Doherty will remain a board member following completion of her term with Mr Provan being elected to the post at the recent AGM on Monday 29 January.

The Glasgow native has spent his career working across various aviation roles including managing director of Aberdeen International Airport, chief operating officer of Heathrow Airport and director of Future Heathrow.

He is joined by incoming vice president Fiona Doherty, who is managing director of Stagecoach West Scotland and UK Service Operations Centre.

The two heavyweight transport leaders will spear head the Chamber for the next two years as the city prepares to face a series of strategically important challenges and changes.

Carol Henry, Peter Duthie, Neil Gibson, Linsday McGarvie and Rachel Sandison will make up the remaining members of the board which was officially confirmed at the AGM.

Speaking at the AGM the newly elected President Mr Provan said: “It is an incredible honour to have been elected President of the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, taking the reins from Gillian who led the organisation in exemplary fashion during her term.

“I am immensely passionate about Glasgow and the business community we have here, which despite all the economic challenges it faces, continues to innovate, adapt and grow.

“There is no denying the city is at a crossroads with a number of significant infrastructure projects reaching milestone moments. As the voice of the business community, it is our job to ensure the city is readying itself for the future, whether that be in regards to sustainability, attracting investment or simply creating the conditions to allow businesses to thrive.”

“I am looking forward to working with the team here and helping to shape and support our business community which makes Glasgow such a vibrant place to live, work and visit.”

Glasgow Chamber chief executive Stuart Patrick added: “Having two of the country’s top business and transport operators leading our organisation into what will be a critical couple of years for the city is very encouraging.

“Glasgow Chamber of Commerce has a central role in shaping the agenda as we head into a very important time for the country. Cities are the heartbeat of our economy and as we fast approach the 850th anniversary of Glasgow City, it is essential that we gear up for what a modern city looks like, and how it is used.

“The leadership team and I will be working with the board to ensure that Glasgow’s voice is heard.”
