MHA, the UK member firm of Baker Tilly International, has made a raft of senior appointments and partner promotions as it continues to grow its Scotland team.
In Edinburgh, the firm has appointed Stephen Thom as corporate tax partner and Joshua Williams as personal client tax director, alongside the promotion of Alan Downie and Allan Smith to partner roles.
Euan Fernie, partner at MHA’s Edinburgh office, said: “Stephen and Joshua strengthen our senior tax capability in Edinburgh, while the promotions of Alan and Allan to partner roles rightly recognise the depth of experience and leadership already within the firm.
“Together, these appointments reflect both sustained growth in Scotland and a clear commitment to investing in people as we continue to expand our team across all levels.”
Mr Thom’s appointment follows a period running his own tax consultancy. He began his career in London with BDO before returning to Scotland to work within a multinational financial services business. He later returned to practice as head of tax at a mid-tier firm and brings extensive experience advising mid to large corporate clients on a variety of matters and across a number of sectors.
Mr Thom has extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of corporate restructuring, the taxation of corporate debt and property related tax structures.
With nearly 20 years’ experience in tax, Mr Williams advises business owners and individuals on personal tax matters, spanning compliance and complex advisory work. He brings strong expertise across agriculture, real estate and professional practices, supporting individuals, owner-managed businesses, trusts and estates.
His experience spans income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax, succession planning, residence matters, HMRC investigations and Land and Buildings Transaction Tax. He joins MHA from accountancy firm CT.
Newly promoted partner Mr Downie joined the firm in 2010 and has played a central role in shaping and growing the corporate audit team, advising medium and large groups across sectors including construction, manufacturing and professional services.
Mr Smith joined in 2012 and brings more than a decade of experience in accounts, tax and financial reporting, with responsibility for a diverse client portfolio spanning professional services, property, medical and investment firms.
MHA is the UK member firm of Baker Tilly International and is an AIM-listed company. In Scotland, MHA operates from offices in Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
