RBS announces the new business banking boss

Royal Bank of Scotland has announced that Marcelino Castrillo, formerly managing director of SME banking at Santander, is to join the bank in the same role within it business banking division.

Mr Castrillo will report into Les Matheson, chief executive of personal and business banking at the Edinburgh-based bank, which is the biggest lender to UK SMEs.

He joins the 81 per cent state-owned bank’s business banking division following three consecutive months of lending growth for the first time in four years.



Net lending was up £16 million in March and overall lending increased by £69m in Q1.

Les Matheson, Chief executive of personal and business banking at RBS said: “I am delighted to confirm the appointment of Marcelino Castrillo, he will be a great addition to my Executive team and his experience makes him the ideal person to help us continue the progress we’re making to achieve our ambitions. We are the biggest lender to UK SMEs but we want to be the best and Marcelino will play a key role in helping us to reach that goal.”

As MD of SME Banking at Santander, Mr Castrillo was been responsible for leading the challenge of scaling Santander’s business bank and has managed the business through a period of significant change.

Prior to Santander, Mr Castrillo worked for The Boston Consulting Group across different countries and industries.

He said: “I am delighted to be joining RBS as it strives to become the best bank for its customers. There is no shortage of exceptional businesses in this country and I look forward to playing a significant role in their future success.”

Marcelino will take over from Abe Tilling who has been the interim managing director since Ian Walters left RBS in December.
