A popular West Lothian hotel and restaurant is expanding its team and undergoing extensive refurbishment thanks to a £495,000 funding package from Royal Bank of Scotland.

The Fairway Hotel, which holds a four-star rating on TripAdvisor, has added four new members to its busy team in the last month, with hopes to expand further.

Situated in Bathgate, the hotel features a restaurant, bar and five bedrooms, and was acquired at the end of 2016 by experienced business owner, Alan O’Sullivan.

Mr O’Sullivan has over 23 years’ experience in the hospitality industry, having worked as a chef in Switzerland and as a manager for two large hotel chains, before setting up his first business in 2009, a pub in Penicuik.

He said: “The business has grown quickly in the last year, and we now employ more than 30 members of staff. Despite our growth, we remain a customer-focused, family-run business that aims to provide the best possible service to our guests.

“In the coming months, we would like to grow our team further and provide training opportunities to young people in the area. I have been in the industry for over 20 years, and have had some great experiences, including living abroad. The hospitality industry provides many opportunities to young people and teaches them valuable skills, such as how to work in a fast-paced environment, and communicate with a wide range of people.

“We are currently working with local schools to find students that are enthusiastic, hardworking and ready to learn.”

Sarah Delo, broker development manager at Royal Bank of Scotland, helped support the deal activity, which was initially referred from LDF Ops.

Stuart Bell, relationship manager at Royal Bank of Scotland, said: “Alan’s vision to grow the business and provide employment opportunities to young people in the local area has been key to the hotel’s success.

“The business is popular with both locals and tourists due to its family-friendly atmosphere, and we are pleased that we could offer support to Alan as he continues to grow his thriving business.”
