Scottish Building Society first to run SBS’s sovereign AI platform in live banking

Scottish Building Society has become the first UK lender to live on a new artificial intelligence platform that lets it run generative AI without customer data leaving its own environment, according to the financial technology provider SBS.

The society, a long-standing SBS client, runs the SBS AI Foundation on Amazon Web Services. SBS says the platform is built on NVIDIA infrastructure and can also be deployed on private cloud or fully on-premises, so that banks can use AI while meeting data residency and privacy rules such as GDPR.

The tech firm said the society is delivering response times roughly 30-40% faster, with more consistent outputs, while keeping the explainability and audit trail that regulators require.

The platform pulls together data from a bank’s SBS systems, covering core banking, lending, digital banking and regulatory reporting, and makes it available to generative AI tools.

SBS lists three uses: AI-guided customer onboarding based on a bank’s own records and products, a “co-pilot” that turns data queries into insights in place of multi-day reporting cycles, and risk monitoring that produces an audit trail without sending data outside the institution.

SBS says autonomous “agentic” AI to carry out multi-step banking processes under human oversight will follow in the near future. It is not part of the live system yet.

The platform is now available to the more than 1,500 financial institutions SBS serves. SBS describes it as the first deployment of NVIDIA’s full AI stack, including NIM microservices, NeMo Guardrails and Nemotron models, within a live core banking system.

Gartner research found that 84% of finance organisations have implemented or plan to implement AI, but only 7% report high or very high impact.

Eric Bierry, chief executive at SBS, said: “Banks want AI they can trust, explain and run wherever their data must live. By building with NVIDIA, we can give our customers that assurance without compromising on governance.

“We are already seeing the results from this work with our early customers, and we look forward to continuing to roll out these capabilities as we help more financial institutions take advantage of AI efficiencies.”

Aser Blanco, global head of banking at NVIDIA, said: “SBS is turning a governed AI runtime into a shared intelligence layer beneath its entire banking platform,” said “With NVIDIA, SBS is giving banks the tools they need to deploy generative and agentic AI across cloud and sovereign infrastructure. Once they have this infrastructure in place, the capabilities it unlocks drive efficiency and ultimately power growth.”
