Financial mutual Scottish Friendly has appointed Alan Rankine as its new chief financial officer (CFO).

Mr Rankine is currently chief actuary at Scottish Friendly and will take up his new role from 1 January 2023. As well as becoming CFO, he will take up the position of an Executive Director of the Board, effective from 1 October 2022, both of which are subject to regulatory approval.

He will replace current finance director Martin Pringle, who will leave Scottish Friendly to pursue other career opportunities. After taking on the Acting CEO role, he agreed to step back into the CFO role to ensure a smooth handover to Stephen McGee and to help with the process of looking for a strong successor to take on the CFO role.

Mr Rankine has been chief actuary at Scottish Friendly since 2018 and has also held senior positions at Deloitte UK as well as working at Standard Life.

He will oversee the finance and investment teams and will be responsible for shaping and evolving the corporate strategy and culture of the organisation. Scott McNeill, current Head of Financial Insurance and Risk, has been appointed to replace Alan as Chief Actuary from 1 January 2023.

In addition, Scottish Friendly can today announce the appointment of Alexander Manas as commercial director, taking over from Neil Lovatt who recently retired.

Mr Manas has 20 years’ experience working in senior strategic, corporate development and portfolio management roles in Belgium and the UK, and will be responsible for overseeing the Marketing, Partnerships and Product delivery functions. He will take up the position on 14 November 2022.

Stephen McGee, CEO, commented: “I’m delighted to announce the fulfilment of these senior roles within Scottish Friendly, as we continue on our journey to becoming the UK’s leading mutual insurer. Having individuals with the calibre and experience of Alan and Scott stepping into these roles shows the depth and strength of talent within the organisation.

“In addition, Alexander will bring with him 20 years’ experience working with large teams to drive strong commercial results, so I am thrilled that he has accepted my offer to join Scottish Friendly as we continue to provide value to our members and the wider community.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Martin for his hard work and commitment over the years and to his dedication to significantly growing our society during his time. I wish him well for the next stage in his career.”
