Standard Life Investments announces new team in Singapore

Edinburgh-based global asset manager Standard Life Investments has announced the appointment of a new team and CEO in Singapore, marking a significant step in the company’s global growth strategy and commitment to Asia Pacific.

The four-strong team in the new Singapore office comprises Choon Wah Wong as CEO Standard Life Investments (Singapore) Pte Ltd and head of Asia Pacific real estate; Ted Roy, deputy fund manager; Jason Lam, associate investment director, Asia wholesale sales; and Tervinder Chal, head of Asia Pacific real estate finance and operations.

In addition to the Singapore team, Mark Baker, fund manager for emerging market debt has moved from London to Hong Kong, bringing further fund management expertise to Standard Life Investments’ Asia Pacific team.



Choon Wah Wong will lead a team to build a real estate fund management and manufacturing platform in Asia Pacific. He will oversee the management of global real estate portfolios in the region and develop new business opportunities. He is also responsible for the overall management of the Singapore office.

Choon Wah complements Standard Life Investments’ 160-strong global real estate team with 16 years’ track record and regional expertise in Asia Pacific direct real estate investment management. He joins from partners group where he was senior vice president, Singapore. Choon Wah reports to Mike Hannigan, head of international real estate, based in Edinburgh.

Ted Roy, deputy fund manager, has relocated from Edinburgh, to expand the company’s Asia Pacific direct real estate investment capability. Ted will advise on property acquisitions and outlooks in the region and manage Asia Pacific assets, reporting to Choon Wah Wong.

Tervinder Chal will be responsible for developing and running the operating platform supporting the Asia Pacific real estate business. Tervinder reports to Paolo Alonzi, global head of real estate finance and operations based in Edinburgh.

Standard Life Investments has already built a strong client base in Singapore, focusing on private banking and institutional investors. Jason Lam, associate investment director, Asia wholesale sales, will relocate to Singapore from Hong Kong, to continue developing client relationships in Singapore and wholesale distribution opportunities across Asia. Jason reports to Virginia Devereux Wong, head of Asia wholesale business based in Hong Kong.

Mark Baker, fund manager, emerging market (EM) Debt, has relocated to Hong Kong. He helps manage Standard Life Investments’ EM debt portfolios, and will work on deepening the team’s research and coverage into Asian emerging markets. Mark reports to Richard House, head of emerging market fixed income based in London.

The team is based at level 37, Ocean Financial Centre in Singapore’s central business district. Standard Life Investments is currently applying for a Capital Markets Services Licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
