Scotch Whisky Association calls for spirits duty freeze in Autumn Budget

Following the Treasury’s announcement that the Autumn Budget will be held on 26 November, the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has called on the Chancellor to implement a multi-year freeze on spirits duty.

Mark Kent, the SWA’s chief executive, argued that the Chancellor’s previous decision to increase the duty burden failed to raise tax receipts and contributed to closures in the hospitality sector. He emphasised the reliance of pubs and restaurants on spirits sales for their profitability, stating they “cannot survive on beer alone”.

The industry body is urging the Chancellor to freeze the tax for the duration of the current parliament and to ensure the tax differential with other alcohol categories does not widen, which it claims puts Scotch at a competitive disadvantage.

Mr Kent said a duty freeze would fulfil the Prime Minister’s promise to “back Scotch producers to the hilt” and provide significant support to the Scottish economy, where 70% of all UK spirits are produced. Highlighting the timeframe, he concluded: “84 days. Back Scotch, support Scotland, and sustain growth across the UK.”
