Greenshoots: Highlands designer supported by Creative Scotland funding scheme

Lochcarron-based textile designer Iseabal Hendry is set to benefit from a new funding scheme launched by Creative Scotland.

Next week, Ms Hendry will launch her first collection of sustainable handwoven leather bags and accessories.

Creative Scotland will match funding to help support her new business if Ms Hendry meets her initial £5,000 crowdfunding target.

The funding will allow Ms Hendry, who is a graduate of Glasgow School of Art, to bring her artisan bags and accessories fully to market, The Press and Journal reports.

Every item produced by Ms Hendy is made of sustainably produced and sources materials, including cotton woven in Scotland on traditional looms which are more than 100 years old.

The bags take around 15 hours each to craft out of leather, which is tanned using natural tannins found in plants, bark, leaves, berries and fruit.

Ms Hendry said: “There is a growing awareness that knowing where your product came from and who made it creates a stronger connection between purchaser, designer and maker. This exciting initiative from Create Scotland takes that a step further – and lets the public build a strong bond with local designers from an early stage.”
