Henderson Loggie has announced the retirement of Alan Davis, partner and head of VAT, who will step down on 31 March after a 43‑year career in tax and more than two decades with the firm.
Widely regarded as one of Scotland’s leading VAT specialists, Mr Davis has been a steady and influential presence within the firm and across the wider profession. Known for his calm leadership, technical authority and famously dry sense of humour, he has played a pivotal role in shaping Henderson Loggie’s VAT practice and culture.
Mr Davis joined Henderson Loggie in 2005, became a partner in 2013 and served as chair of the firm from 2015 to 2023. His tenure as chair spanned a period of significant organisational and economic change, including the Covid‑19 pandemic, during which he was recognised as a reassuring and stabilising leader who helped guide the firm through unprecedented challenges.
His 43‑year career began with 16 years at HMRC before moving into professional practice. At Henderson Loggie, he built one of Scotland’s most trusted VAT advisory teams and earned a reputation for navigating complex legislation with clarity, pragmatism and an unwavering focus on client outcomes. His work included notable successes at the Tax Tribunal and Court of Session.
Mr Davis played a central role in expanding the firm’s Education sector offering. What began as support for university student unions grew under his leadership into a nationally recognised advisory capability for the independent schools sector. His expertise also extended across charities, property, construction and cross‑border transactions, where he was frequently sought out for his ability to translate intricate VAT rules into practical, actionable guidance.
Innovation has been a hallmark of Mr Davis’ approach. Early in his time with the firm, he developed VAT checklists that evolved into the VAT Diagnostic which is now a core tool within Henderson Loggie’s advisory model and widely used to help organisations identify risks and opportunities. His leadership contributed to the VAT team being named Tax Team of the Year in 2013.
Mr Davis has also been an active contributor to the profession. He chaired the Scottish Chapter of the VAT Practitioners Group for eight years and served on the ICAS Indirect Taxes sub‑committee.
Beyond his technical achievements, Mr Davis will be remembered as a cultural anchor within the firm. During the Covid lockdowns, he became the firm’s Friday night quiz master, bringing colleagues together with humour, warmth and his now‑legendary Vic Reeves impressions, moments that reflected the generosity of spirit that defined his leadership.
Henderson Loggie chair Shona Campbell said: “Alan’s contribution to Henderson Loggie and to the wider tax profession has been exceptional. His expertise, integrity and dedication to achieving the best outcomes for clients have set a standard that will endure long after his retirement.
“Alan is not only a trusted adviser but a generous colleague whose humour, warmth and collaborative spirit have enriched our firm.
“As he steps down, Alan leaves behind a strengthened VAT practice, a generation of advisers shaped by his mentorship, and a professional community that recognises him as one of Scotland’s most principled and influential VAT specialists.
“We are deeply grateful for everything he has given and wish him every happiness in the next chapter.”
True to form, Alan has chosen to mark his retirement with a charity fundraiser. On 20 March, he and eleven colleagues and members of Alan’s family will climb the mast of the RRS Discovery in Dundee before zip‑lining to the quayside to raise funds for Dundee Heritage Trust, a long‑standing client and heritage charity.
