AMS Accountants group launches Scottish expansion with £20m growth target
AMS Accountants' Scotland director of growth & partnerships Wendy Atkinson and managing partner Steven Fraser
Manchester-headquartered AMS Accountants Group has launched its expansion into Scotland, securing more than £200,000 in contracts within its opening weeks.
Backed by fresh investment from Macquarie Capital, the group aims to challenge traditional consolidators by building a £20 million Scottish business and creating approximately 200 jobs across the region.
To spearhead this growth, AMS has announced two senior appointments based at neospace in Aberdeen. The firm has appointed Steven Fraser as managing partner (Scotland), while Wendy Atkinson joins as director of growth & partnerships (Scotland).
While currently operating from Aberdeen, the firm plans further recruitment drives in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Mr Fraser said AMS’s approach is already resonating strongly with businesses in Scotland: “Businesses want senior access, transparency and a partner that supports rather than absorbs them. That’s where AMS stands apart. We’re offering a genuinely different model - one built on relationships, autonomy and long-term thinking, not EBITDA targets.”
Mr Fraser brings over 20 years’ experience in the accountancy and advisory sector, including as managing partner at AAB. He will lead AMS’s Scotland strategy, acquiring and empowering local firms, building regional teams, and delivering specialist expertise supported by the wider AMS Group.
Ms Atkinson brings extensive business development and client engagement experience from senior roles at Hunter Adams, Mattioli Woods and Clydesdale Bank. Her appointment marks the first step in building a dedicated Scottish operation, with further recruitment planned in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The pair are currently based at neospace in Aberdeen.
The response from local businesses has been “extremely encouraging”, Mr Fraser said.
“AMS ensures clients get direct access to senior people – something increasingly rare in a consolidating market. Strong relationships and genuine challenge are at the heart of how we work, and that’s what sets us apart. Much of the sector is now driven purely by EBITDA, but we’re committed to growing with our clients, not growing for the sake of it. Client and employee satisfaction are our two non-negotiables – if either drop, we’re doing something wrong.”
Ms Atkinson said the group’s culture and vision were key factors in her decision to join.
“AMS has a powerful story – a family business with a culture that genuinely runs through every team. That strength gives you real confidence when you go out to win work,” she explained. “When you have that foundation, you can build a practice that reflects the needs of Scottish clients rather than a one-size-fits-all model. That’s where the real opportunity lies.”
Mr Fraser said that there has been a clear gap in the market for a firm that combines deep relationships with a full-service offering.
He continued: “Businesses want senior access, transparency and a partner that supports rather than absorbs them. That’s where AMS stands apart. And at a time when there’s uncertainty around investment, we’re committing to building a £20m Scottish business – creating around 200 jobs and backing the region’s potential.”
AMS offers a multi-disciplinary service suite, including audit, tax, corporate finance, business recovery, and legal services. The group holds specialist strengths in energy, industrials, technology, and property.
Notably, AMS intends to replicate the success of its £10m+ medical division, which currently supports over 1,500 healthcare clients across the UK, within the Scottish market.
