And finally… a dram come true

Family-run bottler Gordon & MacPhail is releasing the world’s oldest single malt Scotch whisky, an 85-year-old Glenlivet valued at over £15 million.

Distilled in 1940 and matured in a single sherry cask, Cask 336, the spirit was bottled in February 2025.

Just 125 decanters of the rare whisky will be sold worldwide, each with a retail price of £125,000. The 43.7% ABV single malt is described as having vibrant, full-bodied flavours of dried tobacco, Morello cherry, and Seville orange peel.

To house the historic liquid, Gordon & MacPhail commissioned internationally acclaimed architect Jeanne Gang. Her ‘Artistry in Oak’ design features a handblown glass vessel cradled by four spiralling solid bronze branches, inspired by the American oak cask that nurtured the whisky for eight and a half decades.

Decanter #1 is set to be sold by Christie’s in an online auction from 7-21 November 2025. Proceeds will be donated to American Forests, a US conservation charity dedicated to protecting and restoring oak forests, a resource vital to the whisky industry. The winning bidder will also receive the original cask end and a personalised tasting with a member of the founding family.
