And finally…world’s oldest dram sold at auction

WhiskyThe world’s oldest bottled single malt Scotch whisky has been sold at auction for £17,500.

A whisky collector from Hong Kong paid the fee for The Gordon and MacPhail Generations Mortlach whisky which was distilled in 1938 at the Mortlach Distillery in Dufftown, Moray.

Officials at the specialist whisky auction at Bonhams in Edinburgh said the price fetched for the rare bottle was close to the estimate.

The bottle was part of a limited edition release from the distillery of 54 bottles in a hand blown glass decanter with a sterling silver stopper and cradle.

Whisky writer Charles Maclean described the taste as “remarkable” and “surprisingly lively”.

He added: “No trace of damp wood or must or bung cloth – a delicate, fresh, fruity whisky, but with unusual attributes of waxiness and smokieness – more usual before the 1960s.”
