And finally…a-haggis-a-minute sales predicted

A major supermarket says it is expecting to sell one haggis every minute in the run-up to Burns Night next Wednesday as it stocks its shelves with all the essential ingredients to celebrate the Bard’s birthday on 25 January.

Challenger chain Lidl says that its projected sales of a haggis every minute is the equivalent of 2.3 tonnes.

The supermarket also expects to sell enough shortbread fingers to stand six times higher than Ben Nevis , if they were laid end to end.

The predictions are based on the supermarket’s surge in sales of haggis and shortbread in Scotland last year and it says it is expecting a further increase in sales this time around.

The custom of celebrating The Bard’s birthday on 25th January with a serving of classic ingredients including haggis, neeps and tatties has been practised up and down the country - and not just in Scotland - for many years, with demand for the traditional products increasing.

Paul McQuade, head of buying for Lidl in Scotland, said: “As one of the most important events in the Scottish calendar, Burns Night is traditionally a time for eating, drinking and reciting poetry with family and friends. The worldwide appeal of this day is phenomenal, but especially in Scotland, and we’re proud to offer our customers an excellent selection of quality Scottish food and drink products, at extraordinarily low prices, so that everyone can enjoy the occasion.”
