And finally... Archers take aim

Anti-fraud campaigners have praised the world’s longest-running radio soap opera for running a story on investment fraud.

Over the past few months, characters on The Archers have been caught up in an elaborate investment fraud, one of the UK’s fastest growing crimes.

The storyline was developed in close conjunction with You and Yours, BBC Radio 4’s consumer programme.

It saw several characters invest in a factitious racecourse development in Costa Rica with promises of 12 per cent returns.

Shari Vahl, fraud reporter for You and Yours, said: “The producers wanted to make this fraud as real as possible. I’ve just taken the experience of You and Yours listeners and what’s happened to thousands of people, many of whom have contacted us.

“They have been convinced enough to invest their pensions, large amounts of money, into what seem like really brilliant schemes.”
