And finally... diamonds are forever

One of the world’s purest and most saturated pink diamonds has sold for a record HK$453.2 million (£50.54m) at a Sotheby’s Hong Kong auction.

The sale has established a world auction record price per carat for any diamond or gemstone, and has become the second most valuable jewel or gemstone ever sold at auction.

The record for price per carat was previously held by ‘The Blue Moon of Josephine’, a blue “cushion-shaped” 12.03 diamond sold by Sotheby’s Geneva in November 2015.

The new record, set by ‘The Williamson Pink Star’, reached a US$5,178,124 (c. £4.5m) per-carat price, almost double that of the previous record at US$2,656,909 (c. £2.3m).
