And finally… legal tender

New bank note designs have been launched in the Falkland Islands for the first time in 40 years.
The new £5, £10 and £20 notes entered circulation last week to coincide with Falklands Day.
The design references the first recorded sighting of the Falkland Islands by John Davis aboard the Desire on 14 August 1592, with the inclusion of the national motto “Desire The Right” and imagery of Steeple Jason Island – thought to be Davis’s first view of the islands.
The theme continues with illustrations of iconic local wildlife, including the black-browed albatross and King penguin, and the national flower, the Pale Maiden.
The reverse side features the dramatic landscape of Steeple Jason Island, celebrating the natural environment and the rich biodiversity of the islands.
The launch of the notes coincided with an auction which raised £6,790 for local charities.
Pat Clunie, financial secretary of the Falkland Islands Government, said: “We are proud to present these beautifully designed notes, which so vividly reflect the spirit and character of the Falkland Islands.
“They honour our history while showcasing the wildlife and landscapes, that make the Falklands truly special. This series is a celebration of who we are, woven into the currency we use every day.”
The Falkland Islands pound is pegged to pound sterling and UK bank notes also circulate on the islands.
