And finally... on a roll

A collection of custom-painted skateboard decks is to be auctioned in aid of a new skate park on the Isle of Wight, as Freshwater Parish Council pushes to replace an ageing facility that has served the community for over two decades.

The existing park, built in 2002 from wooden ramps, has reached the end of its usable life, prompting plans for a modern replacement complete with a pump track. The new facility is estimated to cost in excess of £300,000. The council has already secured £200,000 towards that figure, bolstered by a £20,000 grant from the National Lottery Community Fund, and is now seeking to raise the remaining sum needed to break ground.

To support the appeal, more than 30 local artists have transformed blank skateboard decks into original artworks, which are being sold online until 9 May. Parish Clerk Kirsty Gibson described the initiative as something greater than a straightforward fundraising effort.

Clerk, Kirsty Gibson, told BBC News: “This project is about more than just fundraising – it’s about bringing the community together, celebrating the Island’s skateboarding heritage, and creating a facility that everyone can enjoy.

“With the support of local artists and The National Lottery, we are closer than ever to making the skatepark a reality.”
