And finally… pass go, collect 50p

The Royal Mint has rolled the dice on nostalgia, announcing a collectible 50p coin to celebrate nine decades of MONOPOLY.
In partnership with the game’s owner, Hasbro, this marks the first time a board game has been celebrated on an official UK coin.
The commemorative 50p captures the classic elements of the game, featuring well-known tokens, property cards, and Mr. Monopoly himself. A standout feature is an innovative lenticular design on the ‘GO’ square, which cleverly transitions to reveal the famous MONOPOLY money symbol.
Since its official debut in 1935, MONOPOLY has become a global phenomenon, with an estimated one billion players worldwide. Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint, noted that the coin celebrates a “beloved tradition that has brought families together for nine decades.”
The release has generated significant excitement among fans, including Neil Scallan, the Guinness World Record holder for the world’s largest MONOPOLY collection. After a special preview, he described the coin as “the holy grail for any serious MONOPOLY enthusiast.”
To mark the launch, The Royal Mint is hosting a UK-wide “Coin Hunt” on Thursday, 18th September, inviting the public to spot a giant silver Top Hat in London or participate digitally for a chance to win a coin. For collectors in Wales, a different version of the coin can be struck at the Royal Mint Experience from 30th September.
The Brilliant Uncirculated edition of the coin will be available to purchase from The Royal Mint’s website from 15th September, with prices starting at £15. Silver and gold versions will also be available.
