The Codex Sassoon, an approximately 1,100-year-old manuscript considered to be the oldest and most complete version of the Hebrew Bible, has been auctioned off at Sotheby’s New York for an impressive $38.1 million (£30.6m), making it the highest-value manuscript ever sold at auction.

Purchased by US lawyer and former ambassador Alfred Moses, the ancient manuscript will now reside in the ANU Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv, Israel.

The previous record for a manuscript was held by the Codex Leicester, Leonardo da Vinci’s scientific notebook, which was bought by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates for $30.8m (£24.75m) in 1994. However, this sale falls short of the historical document auction record set by hedge fund manager Ken Griffin’s $43.2m (£34.71m) purchase of a first-edition printed copy of the US constitution two years prior, the BBC reports

The Codex Sassoon was last owned by Swiss investor Jacqui Safra, who bought it for £2m in 1989. Its historical significance and remarkable condition have attracted global attention, thus pushing its value to unparalleled heights.
