And finally…sealed with a quaich
British prime minister Theresa May is to present controversial US president Donald Trump with a traditional Scottish cup of friendship when she meets him in the White House tomorrow.
An engraved quaich will be used to ingratiate May to Trump by indulging his sense of Scottish ancestry as she becomes the first world leader to meet him since his taking office last week.
Although himself born in America, Trump is the son of of Mary Anne MacLeod from the Isle of Lewis.
Exchanged by Highland clan chiefs for centuries, a quaich is a two-handled drinking bowl which is a token of hospitality and a symbol of kinship.
Keen to establish a new free trade agreement with America, May will no doubt point out that the cup’s two handles are intended to signify trust on the part of the giver and the receiver.
