And finally…seeing red

And finally…seeing red

A jilted lover has found herself on trial in Italy for violation, subtraction and suppression of correspondence after racking up fines of almost £18,000 by repeatedly driving her former partner’s car through red lights and hiding the penalty notices from him.

A court in northern Italy has heard how between the fines and penalties for late payment, Roberto Buratto, 62, a farmer from San Carlo Canavese, faced a bill of €20,000, The Times has reported.

He met his former partner Luigina Troglia Gamba, 59, in the mid-1990s and lived together on Mr Buratto’s large farm, Il Maiseto, where Ms Troglia Gamba helped run the business.

The relationship began to break down in 2008, and over the next four years Mr Buratto’s car was caught running through red lights on a dozen occasions.

He claims that he failed to pay the fines because he never received them.

Mr Buratto told the court that his former lover was at the wheel when his Nissan Navara ran the red lights and that she had done it for revenge.

“That’s nonsense. The car was used by several other people,” Ms Troglia Gamba said. “It’s not true I hid the fines. I always showed him all the correspondence.”

The case is due to continue in March.
