An island fort built off the Pembrokeshire coast to repulse Napolean’s navy has gone on the market for half a million pounds.

Thorne Island was built between 1852 and 1854 to defend Milford Haven’s naval base from French attack and was designed to garrison 100 men.

It has had several owners since it was sold by the state in 1932, the most recent being Kent Mushrooms which bought it in 2011.

Agents Knight Frank are inviting offers of more than £550,000.

The Grade II-listed fort, located off the Angle peninsula, was once earmarked for a luxury hotel. But it has not been lived in for more than 10 years and has fallen into disrepair.

Based on a 2.5 acre (1 hectare) site, the fort includes:

  • 10 bedrooms
  • Three reception rooms
  • Three bathrooms
  • Two bars
  • Games room
  • A sauna
  • Large courtyard
