Ardbeg whisky’s bold spirit captured in refurbished Islay hotel

Ardbeg House
The unconventional character of Ardbeg whisky is now embodied in Ardbeg House, a unique hotel experience on Islay.
Following the complete refurbishment of the former Islay Hotel in Port Ellen, the 12-bedroom destination retreat has been designed to reflect the brand’s bold spirit and rich heritage.
Ardbeg, owned by LVMH, appointed specialist fit-out contractor Thomas Johnstone Ltd (TJL) to deliver the complex transformation, working closely with the design team at Russell Sage Studio. The project infuses every space with the rugged charm of Islay and the distinctive personality of the world-renowned distillery.
A central feature of the refurbishment was the contribution from TJL’s manufactured joinery division. The team crafted a range of bespoke items for the hotel’s uniquely styled bedrooms, including handcrafted headboards, wardrobes, desks, and bedside tables, all designed to reflect the playful and modernist spirit of Ardbeg.
Beyond the guest rooms, Ardbeg House features a whisky cave, games area, courtyard bar, and a ground-floor restaurant.
“Ardbeg has been part of Islay’s history since 1815, and we’re proud to have contributed to this next chapter,” said Kevin Pick, commercial director at Thomas Johnstone Ltd. “We’re honoured to bring our extensive experience and craftsmanship to this exciting project.”
