Discovery Flexibles secures sixth year of profit following turnaround
Pre-tax profits of £683,000 have been reported by Discovery Flexibles for the year ended 31 December 2024, securing a sixth consecutive profitable year for the Dundee manufacturer.
The Kemback Street firm recorded sales of £15.4 million, a slight decrease from £16.2m in 2023. This reduction in turnover was largely attributed to environmental initiatives, including projects that allowed customers to consume less plastic and switch to more sustainable, cost-effective raw materials. Notably, one such project reduced plastic usage by 70,000kgs annually.
Speaking to The Courier, factory manager Jimmy Urquhart, who rescued the company from near-collapse in 2018, described the results as a testament to the team’s determination. While Mr Urquhart sold the business to Samuel Lawani and Lukasz Mikucki of Mikani Flex Ltd in September 2025, he remains in his post at the factory. The new owners have pledged investment into the site as they build a wider packaging group.
With a workforce of over 70 staff, the company produces packaging for household food brands. To navigate the pressures of plastic packaging taxes, the firm is driving growth through innovation, including barrier-coated papers to replace plastic and patented oxygen sensors designed to reduce fresh meat waste.
